Home runs carry Seminole to baseball title

SEMINOLE — Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco take note: Seminole has a couple bash brothers of its own.

Stephen Pedrick and Austin Berry each hit two home runs — giving Seminole 19 home runs in six tournament games — to lead Seminole to a mercy-rule shortened 11-0 victory Wednesday over Northeast and the 11-12 (major) baseball district 5 title.

Pedrick hit his first home run in the first inning and added another in the sixth, giving him eight for the tournament. Berry's second-inning grand slam put Seminole ahead 9-0. Berry also hit a home run in the sixth inning.

Seminole scored seven runs in the second inning, which was more than enough for Berry, who started on the mound for Seminole and was perfect through three. Northeast's Ryan Taylor and Jacob Lynn were able to get back-to-back singles off Berry to open the fourth, but a strikeout and a double play erased Northeast's best scoring opportunity and ended the game.

Berry finished with eight strikeouts. Seminole advances to the sectional tournament that starts July 18 for all classifications.

13-14 baseball

Seminole 10, Cross Bayou/Gulf Beaches 3: Behind a team effort, Seminole won its second district title in a row in junior baseball.

Jordan Doyle pitched four solid innings to hold the Cross Bayou/Gulf Beaches offense at bay. It was the second straight day of solid pitching for Seminole; against Pinellas Park on Tuesday, Nick Cangemi threw a no-hit shutout.

District 12 9-10 baseball

Palm Harbor 8, Countryside 3: The following players helped Palm Harbor capture a district championship: Cody Bishop, Jack DelMonte, Riley Degman, Danny Grill, Adam Jurco, Brenden Lee, Clayton Moran, David Morrin, Shane Mullen, Trey Putzel, Jack Schmidt, Dalton Shaw and Ryan Sweet.

10-11 baseball

West Pasco 9, Palm Harbor 2: Blaize Grabowski pitched a complete game, giving up one earned run on four hits to lead West Pasco to the 10-11 district championship.

Grabowski struck out 10 Palm Harbor batters while walking none and went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. West Pasco's Mike Dodson was also 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

West Pasco, which features nine players who won the 9-10 baseball district title last season, broke open the game with four runs in the second inning.

11-12 baseball

East Lake 5, Holiday 0: East Lake finished 3-0 in pool play with a rain-shortened victory over Holiday.

Parker Heckman pitched a no-hitter for East Lake and was near perfect with eight strikeouts and one walk.

David Hall hit a home run in the third inning, Mario Micketti finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Tyler Neuhaus was 2-for-2 for East Lake.

East Lake won its three pool play games by a combined 15-2 score.
