Salt Springs Classic Kayak Race is May 9

The Third Annual Salt Springs Classic Kayak Race and Fun Paddle sponsored by the Salt Springs Alliance will be May 9 at the Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park and the Cotee River Seafood Festival.

The race is 6 miles from the state park at 9120 Old Post Road in Port Richey to Sims Park in New Port Richey.

Registration is from 8 to 9 a.m., and participants younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, who must sign their entry form.

Cost is $15 per kayak and includes a free T-shirt.

Preregistration can be done online at www.saltsprings alliance.com.

There will be awards in these divisions: more than 15-foot kayak, 15-foot and under kayak, and tandem.

SOFTBALL: The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 164 and American People Against Cop Killers, or APACK, will host the inaugural Capt. Scott M. Bierwiler Co-ed Softball Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at the Jerome Brown Community Center in Brooksville.

The event is organized by Detective Jason Jernigan, whose immediate superior was Bierwiler. It will benefit the family of the 42-year-old Hernando sheriff's captain, who died after an early-morning collision with a sport utility vehicle on Feb. 19.

The tournament is double elimination and trophies will be given to the champions in the 20-team field.

Proceeds go to the Capt. Scott M. Bierwiler Memorial Trust fund set up through Washington Mutual Bank.

RUNNING: The Arc Nature Coast will host the third annual Spring Lake 5K Run and 2-Mile Fun Walk at 8 a.m. May 23.

The run will be at 5283 Neff Lake Road in Brooksville and registration begins at 7 a.m.

Cost is $25 for the 5K and $20 for the Fun Walk, and includes a T-shirt and scenic run through hills and an equestrian stable.

All proceeds will go the Arc Nature Coast, which helps serve people with disabilities and their families.

ROLLER HOCKEY: The Sunshine Shoot-Out Indoor Ball Hockey Tournament will be June 26-28 at Sportszone2, 7716 Rutilio Court in New Port Richey.

Teams can register for $550 and the tournament is open division for all teams to compete.

Games will be filmed, as well, and prizes will be awarded to the overall team winner, the runner-up and the most valuable player, defenseman and goalie.

The event is sponsored by Matt Garry Inc.

FISHING: The annual Pasco-Hernando Community College Catch and Release Fishing Tournament will be at 8 a.m. May 1 at Hooters, 5336 Treadway Drive in Port Richey.

Boats will depart at 9 a.m. and return at 3 p.m.

All angler teams receive a boat, a licensed guide, breakfast, boxed lunches and beverages, bait and tackle, tournament shirts, goodie bags, entrance to the awards party and recognition on the PHCC Web site.

Proceeds will benefit the PHCC Foundation, which supports programs and activities at the college.
