Locals have strong showing at inaugural 5K in Clearwater

Kendra Miller, 18 of Clearwater, was the fastest county finisher at Saturday's inaugural Crusader Gallop 5K along Ream Wilson Trail in Clearwater.

Miller was the second female runner to cross the finish line with a time of 22:13. The winning pace was set by Anita Freres (21:10) of Reston, Va.

Lyndon Soe, 38 of Clearwater, was the top male finisher locally after completing the 5K in 22:34. He was third in the men's competition. Port Richey's Brian Van Es (20:08) was the overall winner.

TREVER MILLER'S MOB: Sam Chandler of St. Petersburg was the top runner at Saturday's Trever Miller's Mob 5K on Treasure Island. Chandler, 14, ran the 5K in 17:50 to edge Wesley Chapel's Pedro Rodriguez by two seconds.

Madeleine Zolfo, 45 of Treasure Island, was first among women's runners, completing the run in 19:19 to win comfortably. St. Petersburg 14-year-old Alex Eaton (19:36) was runnerup.

Dearden was also the 1-mile female winner, checking in at seven minutes, 45 seconds.

MELBOURNE & BEACHES MUSIC MARATHON: Albert Wieringa, 63 of St. Petersburg, was second in the 60-64-year-old age division at Sunday's Melbourne & Beaches Music Half-Marathon, which serves as the 2010 USA Masters half-marathon championship.

Wieringa completed his run in 1:28:34.

Bill Riley, 73 of St. Petersburg, crossed the line just behind Wieringa in 1:33:12 to win the 70-74-year-old age division.

St. Petersburg's Verna Deolaso finished in 1:59:19, and Clearwater's Laura Piazza came in at 2:27.

In the marathon competition, Arturo De La Fuente, 49 of Largo, had the best time among county racers at 3:44:11.

St. Pete Beach's Marc Reed (3:56:50) and Oldsmar's Cherry Putulin (4:00:15) also had solid showings.

Christopher Peterson, 49 of Tierra Verde, was first in the 40 years old and over division in the hand cycle competition with a time of 1:13:44.

In the 5K, Mike McKillips of Indian Rocks Beach won the men's 45-49-year-old age group in 22:33.

ROTARY'S TWILIGHT 5K: Debra Donald, 51 of St. Petersburg, crossed the finish line at the Rotary's Twilight 5K in Lakeland in 22 minutes Friday to capture the female master's division.

Overall, she was fourth in the women's competition, just more than three minutes behind winner Loni Smith (18:55), 28 of Lakeland.

Neil Coffman, 18 of Lakeland, was the overall winner in 17:15.

The Rotary's Twilight 5K has a unique 7 p.m. start time and is sponsored by The Rotary Clubs of Lakeland.

FISHHAWK RANCH ROAD RACE: Christina Simpson, 48 of St. Petersburg, took first in the women's master division at the 13th annual FishHawk Ranch Road Race 10K on Saturday.

Simpson clocked in at 46:18 and was third overall on the women's side.

Tausha Patterson, 27 of Brandon, was the female champion with a time of 39:39. Eric Hall, 31 of Tampa, was the overall champion, finishing in 34:30.

St. Petersburg's Lisa Ware was the top female runner in the 40-44-year-old age group with a time of 57:44.

Just hours after finding success in Lakeland, Debra Donald continued her string of championship performances by winning the FishHawk Ranch Road Race women's 5K.

Donald's winning time of 21:34 was 21 seconds better than her nearest competitor.
