Pasco-Hernando State College's Tyler Beck was named National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Pitcher of the Week. He was also honored as the Pitcher of the Week in NJCAA Region 8 by the Florida College System Activities Association for games played from Feb. 6 to 13. The sophomore from South Bend, Ind., went 1-0 with a 0.00 earned run average during that period. Beck tossed a complete-game shutout in a 3-0 win over Florida Southwestern State College. He allowed only six hits and one walk while striking out 13.
SPRING HILL LANES VALENTINE'S BOWLING: Spring Hill Lanes had its annual Valentine's Tournament on Feb. 12 with 61 doubles teams competing for the 2017 championship. Winning this year's title was the duo of Barry and Nancy Riebau. The couple bowled a combined 1,126.8 handicap score, dominating the rest of the field by more than 100 pins. They took home $200 for their effort. Coming in second was the tandem of Larry Stellato and Barb Klein (1,026.4), who narrowly edged Mark Kinser & Katrina Hamby (1,024.8). Stellato and Klein split $150, while Kinser and Hamby earned $110. The top ten finishers in the event all cashed out. The fourth- and fifth-place teams were Vic Oliver and Dyleeng Beach (1,015.6) and Paul Hoppe and Melissa Martin (1,001.4). Those tandems took home $100 and $90 respectively. Rounding out the top 10 were Troy and Ronda Englund ($80), Tony Fermane and Penny Rollins ($60), Rick and Nancy Fraccica ($50), Travis and Katie Swann ($40) and Jerry Horton and Carol Legg ($36).
FIVE POINTS OF LIFE MARATHON: Registration is open for the Hernando Five Points of Life Kids Marathon and the Hernando Five Points of Life 5K, presented by Oak Hill Hospital. The event will take place April 1, starting at Target at Suncoast Crossing, 3201 Aerial Way, Spring Hill. This is the fifth year for the kids marathon, started by LifeSouth Community Blood Centers to get kids active and to teach them about the five ways to share life through the donation of blood, apheresis, marrow, cord blood, and organs and tissue. The 5K is in its second year. The kids event offers the chance for participants to run or walk the 26.2-mile marathon distance a little bit at a time, with students in kindergarten through eighth grade logging their miles as they go. Nearly 600 kids are expected to participate. Every participant earns a medal and receives a T-shirt. For kids, registration is free through March 7, then $5 through March 31, and $10 on the day of the event. The 5K for those under 18 is also $5 until March 31 and $10 the day of the event. For ages 18 and older, the 5K is $25 until March 31 and $30 on race day. The 5K will start at 8 a.m., followed by the kids marathon at 9:15 a.m. Participants may register online at fivepointsoflife.com. CAUSE FORE PAWS GOLF TOURNAMENT: The Humane Society of the Nature Coast has announced that Gail Spada Century 21 Alliance Realty will be the lead sponsor for the eighth annual Cause FORE Paws Golf Tournament on April 3. The tournament will take place at Brooksville Country Club, with check-in at 8 a.m. A shotgun start is set for 9 a.m. Pets available for adoption will greet golfers on the course. Breakfast and lunch are included with the $80 fee. The cost also includes 18 holes of golf in a four-person scramble format. The registration deadline is March 31. Explore all your optionsHERNANDO SPORTSMAN'S CLUB: The Hernando Sportsman's Club offers firearms safety classes. The next class dates are scheduled for April 5 and 15. There will also be a special "ladies only" class on March 18. All classes will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hernando Sportsman's Club at 16121 Commercial Way, north of Weeki Wachee. This is an introductory class for new shooters. It will include instruction, live-fire training on the range and a lunch break. All materials and equipment will be provided, including the use of a .22-caliber firearm, ammunition, earplugs and eye protection. The fee is $60, and completion of the class provides the required documentation to apply for a Florida concealed-carry permit. Advance registration is required.
