Runners of all ages turn out for Miles for Moffitt

More than 3,000 runners, walkers and cancer survivors turned out Saturday for the Miles for Moffitt 5K and 1-mile fun run at the USF Sun Dome.

Austin Richmond, a 22-year-old from Clewiston, took top honors in 15:17.9. He was followed by two 28-year-olds, St. Petersburg's Hank Campbell and Crystal Beach's Troy Hull, both in 15:45.

St. Petersburg's Kyle Groh, 13, finished in 20:14.1 and Tampa's James Berndt, 14, logged a 21:35.8. Mother's Day Run

Tyler Greathouse (17:36), a 16-year-old from Palm Harbor, won the I Love "Mothers" Day run in Palm Harbor on Sunday. Other top finishers included Seminole's Charlie Anshadt, Pinellas Park's Juan Cortes, Largo's Scott Brane and Palm Harbor's Dennis Byron.

Helen Lavoie (21:38), 51 of Holiday, was the fastest woman. She was followed by Clearwater's Terri Doheny, St. Petersburg's Amy Keener, Treasure Island's Kristin Chambers and Safety Harbor's Carol Bancroft.

Traveling runners

Hudson's Keith Balsley, 46, made Pasco County proud on Saturday when he won the Clydesdale division at the 29th Annual Mayfaire Classic 5K Road Race in Lakeland with a time of 21:21. Balsley had a pace of 6:53.

• Mickie Flinner, a 73-year-old from Crystal Beach, just returned from Oklahoma City where she completed the OKC Memorial Marathon to honor those who died in the bombing of the federal building there in April, 1995.

The weather was far from perfect — the temperature was in the 40s, winds steady at 30-40 mph and raining — but Flinner finished 5:53, the first in her age group. It was her 11th marathon since she stared running them in 2002.

"There's not so much competition out there when you're my age," she said.
