Triathletes keep it close at Crystal River sprint

Tierra Verde's Chris Pyhel nearly captured first place at the Crystal River Sprint Triathlon Series Sprint No. 3 at Fort Island Gulf Beach Park in Crystal River on Saturday.

Pyhel completed the quarter-mile swim, 15-mile bike and 3-mile run in 1:03:26 and was just edged out by Land O'Lakes' Jeffrey Hill, who was the overall champion after crossing the line in 1:01:51. Pyhel was buoyed by a fast start in the swim (6:10.8) and continued that momentum into the bike portion (19:41.7).

Katherin Van Alla took first place in the masters female division after finishing in 1:19:00.

Local age group winners from Saturday's triathlon include: (F65-69) Lenore Ruppert, St. Petersburg, 1:30:14; (Clydesdale) Ron Worden, Palm Harbor, 1:12:17; (female fat tire) Paige Railey, Clearwater, 1:31:32; (M35-39) Pyhel.

Cycling results

Flying Fish Bikes hosted its sixth of seven cycling time trial races at Fort De Soto Park on Thursday.

There were 40 competitors who suited up for the 15K, which was won by Charlie Zoeller in a time of 19:52. Top five finishers were Roy Foley (second, 20:14), Alan Badia (third, 20:38), Greg Pickren (fourth, 20:42) and Chris Pyhel (fifth, 20:45).

In the women's competition, Whitney Lassiter rode to a first-place finish after completing the course in 23:41. Top five female finishers included Sandra Pehl (second, 24:08), Carol Davis (third, 26:10), Patricia Hoffman (fourth, 26:26) and Karen Monkus (fifth, 26:58).

The final Flying Fish Time Trial will take place Thursday, Oct. 1.

Upcoming events

Nearly 800 participants will compete at the Sand Key Triathlon in Clearwater's Sand Key Park on Sunday.

The race starts at 7:15 a.m. and consists of a one-third-mile swim, 11-mile bike and 3.1-mile run.

In 2008, St. Petersburg's Nat Glackin narrowly beat out Andrew Canning, also of St. Petersburg, after finishing in 57:57. Canning was second at 58:26.

Among female competitors, Christine McDonald of Palm Harbor was first out of the water and finished second overall after crossing the line in 1:06:46. Tampa's Holly Petrak (1:00:34) was the top female finisher.

Today is the final day to register. Contact Bev Buysse at (727) 526-5371 before midnight to be included in the race.

Also on Sunday, Clearwater's Del Oro Grove Park will host the Ace of Clubs 10K and 5K. All races have a 7:30 a.m. start time.

The Ace of Clubs 10K and 5K are part of the Aces are Wild running and racewalking series. Proceeds from the event will benefit the American Diabetes Foundation.

Across the bay

Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo is hosting the seventh annual Zoo Run Run on Saturday.

The Zoo Run Run is a 5K race that winds through the zoo and along the Hillsborough River. The race starts at 8 a.m. Check in is between 7 and 8.

Children under the age of 11 are invited to take part in the half-mile Fun Run, which starts at 9:15 a.m.

Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers in the 5K, and all race participants receive free entry into the zoo for the day.

Registration is $25 for the 5K and $10 for the Fun Run.
