Two PHSC athletes accept scholarship offers

On April 15, Pasco-Hernando State College hosted a signing day event for two athletes who penned letters of intent to play for universities after they graduate from PHSC.

Sophomore volleyball player Jordan Bickett, a middle hitter, signed a national letter of intent with Georgia Regents University in Augusta, Ga. A team captain, Bickett saw playing time in 36 matches in 2014, recording 352 kills, 48 service aces, 196 digs and 75 blocks. She is from John Paul II Catholic High School in Tallahassee.

Chris McCormick, a sophomore baseball starting pitcher, signed a letter of intent with the University of Tampa. His 2015 season statistics were strong, with a 5-3 record and a 1.82 earned-run average. McCormick is from Mitchell High School in Trinity.

PHSC SUMMER CAMPS: Pasco-Hernando State College is offering multiple summer athletic camps in basketball, fast-pitch softball, baseball and volleyball.

All camps will be on the West Campus at 10230 Ridge Road in New Port Richey. The camps will be directed by PHSC head coaches, along with assistant coaches and college athletes.

Sessions will include fundamental skills, individual player development and team competitions. Fees include registration, camp T-shirts and instruction.

The co-ed basketball camp will run from June 8-10, from 9 a.m. to noon each day. For ages 7 to 17, instruction will be led by PHSC men's basketball coach Michael Jones. The fee is $75. A skills session will also be held from 1 to 3 p.m. each day for ages 7 to 17. The fee for that session will be $50. Both camps can be attended for $120.

The fast-pitch softball camp is June 8-11, from 9 a.m. to noon each day. For girls between the ages of 8 and 17, the clinic will be run by PHSC softball coach Tom Ryan. The fee is $65.

The boys baseball camp is June 8-10, from 9 a.m. to noon each day. For players ages 7 to 13, those in attendance will have the opportunity to learn from PHSC athletic director and baseball coach Steve Winterling. The fee is $75.

The individual skills portion of the girls volleyball camp will be from June 15-17, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. each day. It is open to ages 8 to 18. A specialty session with more detailed instruction will take place from June 15-17, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. each day, for ages 12 to 18. Both camps will be run by PHSC volleyball coach Kim Whitney. Cost is $100 for one camp or $175 for both.

PHSC SOFTBALL PLAYERS INVITED TO PUERTO RICAN NATIONAL TEAM TRYOUT: Three players from the Pasco-Hernando State College women's softball team have been invited to participate in a tryout for the Puerto Rican women's national and junior women's national softball teams.

The tryout will be from June 8 to 13 at the International Softball Federation complex in Plant City. PHSC softball players accepting the invitation include sophomore outfielder Noemi Chavez, freshman outfielder Jami Aguayo and freshman pitcher/infielder Brooke Gonzalez.

The national and junior national teams will compete in several summer events in the United States and Canada.

RUN FOR DAVID 5K: The inaugural Run for David 5K is set to take place May 23 at Crews Lake Park in Shady Hills.

The fundraiser was organized by friends of David Cotney, a local youth tennis player who fought leukemia before he died almost a year ago. Proceeds will go to the Cotney family for David's medical expenses.

The race is set to start at 8 a.m. Afterward, there will be games, raffles, music and food. Those who choose not to run may still attend the event.

Free T-shirts will be provided to runners who register before May 9. Registration will be open until the day of the race. The entry fee is $15 for adults and $8 for children under age 14.

SPRING LAKE 5K: The Spring Lake 5K Run and 2-Mile Fun Walk, sponsored by the Arc Nature Coast, will be May 23.

The course for the run will be in scenic eastern Hernando County. It will take runners over a variety of terrains, from asphalt to a nature trail through the woods. The event will support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Registration begins at 7 a.m., and the races will start at 8 a.m.

Food will be available after the race, and awards will also be handed out at that time. Medals will be awarded for first, second and third place in all age groups, including for men and women's groups in five-year increments.

HERNANDO SPORTSMAN'S CLUB: The Hernando Sportsman's Club will offer firearms safety classes during the coming months. The next class dates are May 6 and 16 and June 3. A special "ladies only" firearms safety class will be on June 20.

All classes will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hernando Sportsman's Club on 16121 Commercial Way, north of Weeki Wachee.

The fee is $60, and completion of the class provides the required documentation to apply for a Florida concealed carry permit. Preregistration is required. Registration for the classes can be completed by calling (352) 597-9931.
