Weekend heat doesn't slow triathletes in Crystal River

The Crystal River Sprint Tri saw 244 triathletes turn out for another hot race Saturday.

Palm Harbor's Spencer Smith, winner of this year's Escape from Fort DeSoto Triathlon, finished first in 55:57.

Other locals who finished in the top 10 included Palm Harbor's Lucas Caron (fourth) and Palm Harbor's Philip LaHaye (eighth), the race director for the St. Anthony's Triathlon.

The overall women's winner was Tracy Parker of Odessa in 1:09:02. Denise Faribanks of Tampa went home with the women's master title.

FCU 5K for Kids

Hot, humid weather didn't stop local runners from turning in some sizzling times at the Grow Financial FCU 5K 4 Kids in Tampa on Friday night.

Sixteen-year-old Mark Parrish of Tampa finished first in 17:22, for a mile pace of 5:36. He was followed by Rick Straughen, a 27-year-old from Shelby Township, Mich., in 17:28.

In the women's ranks, Tampa runners dominated. Terri Rejimbal, 39, took the top spot in 19:53. She was followed by Jennifer Kornosky, 28, in 24:18 and Julie Hufnagel, 25, in 24:19.

In the 1-mile race, 17-year-old Keegen Bixler hammered out a 4:42.

Ironman 70.3

Months of training paid off for many local triathletes who completed the recent Ironman 70.3 Florida in Orlando on May 18.

Members of the TriLewis team turned in some impressive performances at this world-class triathlon, which drew competitors from across the country.

Among the first-time long-course finishers were Paul Andrews and Krista Eyler of St. Petersburg, Robin Moen of Largo, Joan Kuykendall of Belleair and Christine Tekautz of Clearwater.

Other team members who shared the course were Chuck Wasson of Largo, George McCreary of Treasure Island and Laurie Laurino of Tierra Verde.

Several TriLewis members also brought home age-group medals, including Leslie Gerlach and coach Lewis Bennett of Largo and St. Petersburg's Dan Chechele, who also earned a qualifying slot for the Ironman 70.3 Championships that will be held at Clearwater Beach in November.

Several members of Largo's Team Outspokin finished, including Ryan and Terry Repp and Beth and Joel Wonicker-Cook, all of Palm Harbor, and Heather Ellison of Clearwater.

Ocean Mile

Clearwater Beach Patrol kicked off its 2008 season with the first of three Ocean Mile swims at Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach on May 17.

The overall winner was Gainesville's William Walters, who finished the swim along the beach in 21:12.

Other male winners included Briland Farnell of Clearwater in 27:26 (14 and under); Zachary Lain of Clearwater in 25:44 (15-19); Johnny Albritton of Clearwater in 31:08 (20-24); John Sibley in 29:34 (30-34); J.P. Atherholt of Clearwater in 24:24 (35-39); Rob Farnell of Clearwater in 27:25 (40-44); Ron Collins of Clearwater in 25:13 (45-49); John Connelly of Belleair in 26:44 (50-54), and Pat Marzulli of Indian Rocks Beach in 27:56 (55-59).

The fastest woman was Kylie Kastes of Palm Harbor in 21:22. Age-group winners included Ashley Rossi of Clearwater in 21:32 (15-19); Amanda Shirley of Largo in 26:52 (20-24); Amy King of Dunedin in 30:38 (35-39); Maureen Montgomery of Clearwater in 33:04 (44-49); Sharon Steinmann of Belleair in 27:48 (50-54) and Patrice Hoffman of Palm Harbor in 36:38 (55-60).

More swimming

St. Petersburg Aquatics Summer Swim League program, run in conjunction with the city of St. Petersburg, will introduce youngsters (5-18) to competitive swimming this summer.

The following pools have programs: Fossil Park Pool, 6739 Ninth St. N; Lake Vista Pool, 1450 60th Ave. S; McLin Pool, 602 14th St. S; Northwest Pool, 2331 60th St. N, Shore Acres Pool, 4142 Shore Acres Blvd NE, and Walter Fuller Pool, 7883 26th Ave. N.

The registration dates are Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. and Monday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the previously listed pools. Practice begins June 3 and runs through Aug. 1.

Cost is $12 per swimmer. A copy of the swimmer's birth certificate required. Additional information and sign-up forms are available at www.stpetersburgaquatics.com.

Biking

Steven Rusnak, a 15-year-old from Seminole, won the USCF Florida State Criterium Championship recently.

The St. Petersburg Catholic High sophomore competed against more than 30 junior bike racers from the state in a 20-lap race through the around the streets in downtown Lakeland. He is a member of the Cycle Science Bicycling team and will go on to compete in the junior national championships in Orange County, Calif., on Aug. 6-10.

Nick Lucas from Pinellas Park finished first in the state in BMX Expert Class. The 17-year-old rides for a local bike shop J&R Bicycles on Bryan Dairy Road and hopes to make the U.S. national team in time for the 2012 Olympics.
