Flyers gain playoff spot with win

CHICAGO — Defenseman Radko Gudas scored on a deflected shot in the third period and the surging Flyers beat the Blackhawks 3-2 on Wednesday to move into a wild card playoff spot.

Philadelphia improved to 8-1-1 in its past 10 games and leapfrogged idle Detroit for the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference. Chicago lost its fourth consecutive game.

Expansion draft: While the NHL decides whether to add teams, it has come up with a framework for an expansion draft. The plan was distributed to general managers at their meeting in Boca Raton. Las Vegas and Quebec City have applied for expansion teams. If one is added, teams possibly would lose one player each. If both are added, team could lose two players. Teams could protect seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie or eight skaters and a goalie. Players in their first two years in any league and unsigned draft picks would be exempt.

  1. Fennelly: It's high time for Bucs to take Tampa Bay back

TAMPA — Welcome to the proving ground.

    Bucs training camp begins today.

    Hard Knocks and flop sweat.

    Work and more work.

  4. Rays morning after: How exactly did they let that game slip away

Rays manager Kevin Cash assumed Thursday's game was over when Gary Sanchez rolled a ground ball toward the shortstop spot with the tying run on third and two outs in the ninth. So did closer Alex Colome. As well as second baseman Tim Beckham.

The 10 strikeouts look flashy, but RHP Chris Archer was not his sharpest Thursday. He allowed three runs on seven hits, including three straight in the two-run second and a Gary Sanchez homer in the third, and lasted only six innings, throwing 102 pitches.
