Fill-in goalie lifts Senators

OTTAWA, Ontario — Andrew Hammond made 42 saves in his first NHL start and led the Senators to a 4-2 win over the Canadiens on Wednesday night.

Milan Michalek, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Mark Stone and Kyle Turris, scored for Ottawa.

Hammond was called into action Monday to replace starter Robin Lehner, who was hurt in the second period against Carolina. Lehner was out Wednesday. With Craig Anderson already out with a hand injury, Hammond got the start.

Wings win in shootout: Tomas Tatar scored in regulation and in the shootout, leading Jimmy Howard and the visiting Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the Blackhawks. Gustav Nyquist also scored in the tiebreaker for Detroit, which won for the third time in 11 shootouts. Jonathan Toews gave Chicago the lead in the first round of the shootout, but Patrick Kane's backhander went off the crossbar, and Patrick Sharp was stopped by Howard on the final attempt.

Around the league: Jets forward Mathieu Perreault sustained a significant lower-body injury Monday and is likely out until around the end of the regular season, the team said. … The Oilers activated goaltender Ben Scrivens off injured reserve and placed goalie Viktor Fasth (knee injury sustained Monday) on the injured list. Scrivens injuring a hamstring on Feb. 9. … Flyers defenseman Nick Schultz signed a multiyear extension. Terms were not announced.
