Bucs journal: Dirk Koetter says plan unchanged for injured Jameis Winston

TAMPA — The day after Bucs general manager Jason Licht said QB Jameis Winston may be sidelined for an "extended period," coach Dirk Koetter said the topic of the quarterback being shut down for the season has not come up in conversation.

"There has been no discussion between Jason and myself of him not playing again," Koetter said in reiterating the plan to rest Winston for two games — including Sunday at Miami — and then re-evaluate his injured shoulder. "That would all be something that would have to come up in the future."

Backup Ryan Fitzpatrick helped the Bucs to a 15-10 victory against the Jets on Sunday, and Koetter confirmed he’ll start again Sunday, with Ryan Griffin as the top backup.

Fitzpatrick has faced the Dolphins 10 times. He’s 2-1 as a starter against Miami over the last two seasons while with the Jets, including a four-touchdown game in a 2015 win against Miami.

‘Dumb mistake’

The Bucs were close to an easy 15-3 victory Sunday, but a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty on DT Chris Baker gave the Jets a first down, setting up a 38-yard touchdown. The Bucs recovered an onsides kick to clinch it, but Baker’s penalty resulted in an argument among players on the sideline in the final minute.

"I think when that penalty happened, pretty much everyone on the sideline wanted to get in a fight with Chris Baker, including me," Koetter said. "He’d beat me up, so I didn’t. Chris is a very smart player, and that was not a smart penalty."

Baker said the argument was simply the emotions of wanting to win and him getting in the way of that, if briefly.

"Everything was fine," Baker said. "We just wanted to shut them out in the second half. I made that dumb penalty. I didn’t think it was a penalty. … Guys are just passionate and want to win and we got into a little argument because it was just a dumb play. That’s football. We hugged and kissed after and we’re straight."

Koetter said CB Vernon Hargreaves will have an MRI today to check on his hamstring, which knocked him out of Sunday’s game. The Bucs have limited corner depth with Robert McClain out Sunday with a hamstring injury. Javien Elliott filled in at nickel after Hargreaves’ injury. … The announced attendance for Sunday’s game was 57,911, but the actual attendance, per the Tampa Sports Authority, was 46,333, down from 48,744 two weeks earlier against Carolina. … With WR Mike Evans returning from his one-game suspension, WR Freddie Martino was waived to make room. Martino had two special-teams tackles Sunday in his season debut and is likely to return to the practice squad.
