Saints update

Carney goes from kicker to mentor

METAIRIE, La. — Two days after waiving veteran K John Carney, the Saints brought him back as a kicking consultant.

Coach Sean Payton announced the move after Thursday's practice. Payton said Carney's knowledge of the game from his 21 years of NFL playing experience — which began with a four-game stint for the Bucs in 1988 — will be invaluable to second-year K Garrett Hartley. By accepting the job, Carney, 45, cannot kick again this season.

Carney played in 11 games this season, making 13 of 17 field-goal attempts and 50 of 52 point-after tries.
