The Bucs’ Chris Simms, whom the Bucs might try to trade, has not taken a regular-season snap since the third game of 2006.

TAMPA — Quarterback Chris Simms has decided not to participate in the Bucs' offseason workouts, an indication he no longer fits into next season's plans and could be traded. Although the workouts are voluntary, Simms also skipped last week's quarterback orientation for the first time in his career. "I just think … it's in my best interest to continue my own workouts and to just wait and see what happens with the team," Simms said. "I don't really know what's going to happen. As far as the Bucs and the quarterback position goes, it's always an adventure." Simms, who has not taken a regular-season snap since rupturing his spleen in September 2006, said he is completely recovered from the surgery, which forced him to sit out all of last season. "I'm back to 100 percent and just excited about getting back on the field again," he said. But Simms' chances of returning to the field in a Bucs uniform diminished March 3, when they acquired Brian Griese from the Bears for a 2009 sixth-round pick. The most likely scenario is the Bucs, who own just five picks this year, will try to trade Simms before the draft on April 26-27. Talks could begin this weekend at the owners' meetings in Palm Beach. The Packers and Vikings are among the teams seeking a veteran quarterback. Bucs general manager Bruce Allen could not be reached for comment. The Bucs have six quarterbacks under contract: Jeff Garcia, Griese, Simms, Luke McCown, Bruce Gradkowski and the retired Jake Plummer. Simms said he has split time between working out on his own in Tampa and traveling to New Jersey, where he has thrown with friends and his father, former Giants Super Bowl quarterback Phil Simms. Griese, 33, appears to be the Bucs' choice to back up Garcia, leaving McCown and Gradkowski to fight it out for No. 3. But the Bucs believe they have value in Simms, who has earned $7.1-million in the past two seasons despite playing just three games. Simms is entering the final season of his contract and is scheduled to earn a $2-million base salary. Coincidentally, it was Simms' performance in 2005 that prompted Griese's departure from Tampa Bay. Griese went 5-1 as the starter before tearing his ACL. Simms entered and went 6-5 in leading the Bucs to the playoffs. During the ensuing offseason, the Bucs balked at paying Griese a $2.6-million roster bonus and released him. He later signed with the Bears. Simms went 0-3 (with one touchdown and seven interceptions) to start 2006 and ruptured the spleen against Carolina. After surgery, he said the muscles in his abdomen were slow to recover, affecting his throwing ability and body coordination. But his condition improved after seeing Anthony Galea, the team physician of the CFL's Toronto Argonauts. NFL to discuss hair The owners' meetings will include discussion on banning players from having hair flow below the names on the back of their jerseys. The rule, proposed by the Chiefs, does not require players to get haircuts, instead "to tuck it up inside their helmets," said Falcons president Rich McKay, chairman of the league's competition committee. season opener: The Giants will host the Redskins on Sept. 4, the Thursday before Week 1, the Washington Post and Associated Press reported. But the league is considering starting the game at 7 instead of 8:30 to avoid clashing with the final night of the Republican national convention. A decision and official announcement of the Giants' opponent is expected Monday. Colts: President Bill Polian signed an extension through 2011. In his 10 seasons, the Colts have gone 105-55, reached the playoffs eight times and won one Super Bowl. Packers: Long snapper Rob Davis, the last active player from the most recent Super Bowl, retired. Davis played 167 games over 12 seasons, including the loss to the Broncos in January 1998. Seahawks: Pro Bowl corner and franchise player Marcus Trufant agreed to a six-year, $50.2-million deal ($20-million guaranteed). He has 16 interceptions in five seasons, seven in 2007. Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

The Guy left part of himself on the field that day and Gruden abused him the whole time. The NFL Not For Long league is strong in Tampa. If I was Chris I would demand a Trade and go somewhere else. Thanks for hanging in there. Go BUCS!!!!

People STILL believe Simms is the QB of the future? His delivery is way too slow and he releases the ball way too low to ever be anything other than 3rd stringer. Some of you people probably still believe Shaun King is the answer.

All is off base. Gruden turned Rich Gannon into an MVP QB and helped revive Griese's career. Garcia has cetainly flourished in the system.

The Bucs aren't the most undecisive team in the NFL. ALL NFL teams have the EXACT same situation come up every year. It's called the business of football. Let's not get carried away with extreme statements.

No QB has succeeded under Gruden? Do you live under a rock? Ever heard of Rich Gannon? How about Jeff Garcia last year?

Owes the Bucs nothing? Durr...doesn't his contract suggest he owes them quite a bit for a $2 million salary? Indecisive? I'd say getting Griese indicated a significant decision was made re: Simms. He has a Brady arm but Rob Johnson brain. C

If you get hurt under Jon Gruden you are automatically in his dog house, apparently if you almost give your life on the field for your team you are even worse in Chucky's eyes. I pray that this talented young man finds a great team far away Grud

John, I bet you are one of the fans who complains about loyalty in our wonderful game. The Bucs did the right thing last year considering Simms gave everything including his spleen for the team. The Bucs don't always make the rights moves except

We did pay him a lot last year but, contrary to fans complaints in the past about not taking care of players, this guy gave himself to the Bucs on the field so, if we paid him 2 Mil to recover so be it. Now, trade him to Atlanta, GB or Baltimore...

BIG HEART, strong arm, and great attitude. not a true west coast style check down qb, in many ways, more talent, but he will succeed in a complete drop back style offense as will the Buccaneers offense with a shifty, rag-tag style qb. Best of

He gave a spleen to this team...that alone should be worth two million. Trade him to the Jets, he is exactly what they need: a strong armed big QB who has experience and can handle the NY pressure and hits.He has the most upside of any current Buc QB

"Gruden is death for quarterbacks" Tell that to Rich Gannon. Great kid, bad timing, Bucs owe him nothing and he owes the Bucs nothing. Good luck in his recovery and his future wherever it ends up.

As a fellow Longhorn who watched Chrissie go 0-4 vs OU, I was in disbelief the day they wasted a #3 pick on him. I'm glad we paid him since we almost got him killed. Now I anxiously await his departure. Stay away from my #2 tea

7 million dollars for 3 games???? Sorry, that just doesn't compute in my mind when there are so many needy people and so many opportunities to contribute for the good of all.

QB's have flourished under Gruden. Garcia and Gannon both did well enough to get pro bowl invites. The QB's just need experience and the attitude to match Gruden. I wish Simms nothing but the best as he gave his all to the Bucs.

Somehow I saw this coming. Good Luck with your new team Chris. I am sure you will do better anywhere else but here. Gruden=QB death. Can' imagine why Plummer stays retired.

What kind of statement does he think he's making? Nobody cares about an injury prone QB sitting out VOLUNTARY WORKOUTS. He's getting traded on draft day anyways, and was garbage for the short time he was healthy.

It would realy suck if they did trade Chris. I think he could be the future here in Tampa, but instead Gruden is in love with Gradkowski the worlds worst QB. If Chris does leave i wish him the best of luck.

Another Buc QB who leaves and get a SB ring elsewhere. What a shame, if this kid is healthy, he's the best QB on the team. Garcia threw 5-6 passes that Joey had to come back to the ball!. Sims can hiy a QW in stride at 65- 70 yards dow

Good. I don't want to see another batted ball at the line of scrimmage or a pass forced into tight coverage. He's got the slowest release and telegraphs his throws. Nice guy, but lowsy fundamentals.

It sucks the Gruden has screwed this up too. Simmms WILL be a good qb in the NFL. I wish Gruden got fired so Simms would want to stay in TB. where ever he goes i will root for him. Remember guys, he laid it all on the line for the Bucs.

What hurts Chris most is the way he prances onto the field. Fans mistake that as being weak. He's tough as the other QB's. The best we have. QB's are only as good as their off. line. Both lines were lot better last year. Gruden's

I feel bad for this guy. He is a good young talent and deserves a second chance here as the quarterback of the future. He is better than any other backup we have and has a great deep ball. Green Bay could be a very good situation for him.
