New format: Only Rounds 1-2 will be held today with Rounds 3-7 held Sunday. In previous years, Rounds 1-3 were held the first day and 4-7 the second.

New start time: The start of the draft has been moved from noon to 3 p.m.

New time limits: The time between picks has been reduced, from 15 minutes to 10 for the first round and 10 to seven for the second. It remains five in Rounds 3-7.

Done deal: Jake Long, the Michigan tackle who already has reached a deal to become the No. 1 pick with the Dolphins, is the second Wolverine chosen No. 1 overall (Tom Harmon, Bears, 1941).

Early bird: Long signed his deal with Miami four days before the draft, hardly a record. That goes to Bruce Smith, above, who signed with Buffalo 68 days before the 1985 draft. Other early signees were Vinny Testaverde with Tampa Bay (26 days before 1987 draft), Irving Fryar with New England (21 days before 1984 draft) and Aundray Bruce with Atlanta (18 days before 1988 draft).

Only 31 first-rounders: The Patriots lost their first-round pick for the spying controversy. But thanks to a trade during last year's draft, they own the 49ers' pick (No. 7).

Teamwork: Arkansas running backs Felix Jones and Darren McFadden likely will become the fourth set of running backs from the same school to be selected in the first round. The others: Ohio State's John Brockington (Packers) and Leo Hayden (Vikings) in 1971; Florida's John L. Williams (Seahawks) and Neal Anderserson (Bears) in 1986; and Auburn's Ronnie Brown (Dolphins) and Cadillac Williams (Bucs) in 2005.

High priority: Today could mark the first time since 1970 three defensive linemen are chosen among the first five with Glenn Dorsey (LSU), Vernon Gholston (Ohio State) and Chris Long (Virginia) likely to go high.

Collegiate repeat: Southern Cal's Sedrick Ellis and Keith Rivers likely will go high. The last time players from the same school were consecutive picks in the top 10 was Miami's Sean Taylor (fifth to the Redskins) and Kellen Winslow (sixth to the Browns) in 2004.

Frequent territory: Colleges with the most first-round picks since the first AFL-NFL combined draft in 1967: USC (56), Miami (55), Ohio State (50), Florida and Notre Dame (35), Florida State and Tennessee (34), Michigan and Penn State (31) and Texas (30).
