TAMPA — Jeff Garcia hasn't backed off his demand for a new contract since going public with his frustrations a month ago.

In fact, the Bucs' starting quarterback is perhaps more adamant about it than ever.

Saying he might opt to skip future offseason workouts and repeatedly calling for the front office to show him some "respect," Garcia dug his heels in a bit deeper.

"There might be a time when I might have to stand up," he said Tuesday after completing a voluntary workout at One Buc Place. "I hate to do that to jeopardize my teammates because they're out here and I don't want to let them down in any sort of way. But I think at some point, you just want to see the respect from up top given."

That's where general manager Bruce Allen sits. He was unavailable for comment, but his iron-fisted negotiating style means this likely won't be settled soon. Garcia said the sides were scheduled to talk Friday, but the Bucs canceled for unexplained reasons.

Garcia is entering the final season of a contract signed in 2007. After leading the Bucs to the playoffs and appearing in the Pro Bowl, he seeks a raise from the $2-million base salary he is scheduled to earn to a figure more in line with the average starting quarterback. Most make $6-million or more. He also remains annoyed he lost more than $1-million in playing-time incentives, the result of being benched for the final six quarters of last season. From the team's perspective, the situation undoubtedly is complicated by Garcia's age, 38.

Garcia says the Bucs at one point appeared likely to negotiate. But there has been little progress despite the team's comfortable salary-cap position.

"They've indicated to my agent that they would be working something out or trying to work something out," he said. "But it's at a snail's pace right now. At the rate it's going, who knows if it'll happen before the season starts?"

Running back Earnest Graham is perhaps asking the same question. He likely expected to have a new contract by now, but there has been no indication of progress and Graham continues to skip offseason workouts, missing his fourth practice Tuesday. Allen said in January an extension for Graham was likely, but he is still bound to his original contract that will pay him the veteran minimum of $605,000 in 2008, the final year of the deal.

"There are a few players on this team who I think should be rewarded," Garcia said. "A guy like Earnest Graham, who had such a spectacular season last year … he's stuck on the bottom. I don't think that anybody here is trying to break the bank. But it's about what your peers around the league are making and it's about being appreciated and respected."

Garcia perhaps summed up his comments when he looked into the cameras and offered a not-so-subtle message to the front office.

"This is a physical game and you want players to go out and give everything they have and lay their bodies on the line, lay their hearts on the line," he said. "Well, we want you to lay something on the line."

HAYE SIGNS ON: Defensive tackle Jovan Haye could not come to terms on a long-term deal but opted to sign his one-year restricted free-agent tender. Haye is scheduled to become a free agent after the season but he and the team can continue working toward a new deal in the meantime. He'll earn $2.09-million for 2008.

CADDY'S TIMETABLE: Injured running back Cadillac Williams said his rehab is progressing well and that he expects the team to consider several options before training camp that include placing him on the physically unable-to perform list or even, he said, leaving him on the active roster for camp.

Garcia has NO chance with any other team in NFL. More DEFENSIVE STUDS are the answer. Allen should give O Thurman a chance with Bucs. He is better than any other LB we have including D Brooks.Garcia is one hit from ending his career.

Honor your contract. Would it be fair if the team reduces your salary after that first year?
by Dale May 16, 2008 2:01 PM
Come on people speak out against what Allen is doing..I'm sure we all know how it feels to "put up" & give it our all thinking management will respect our efforts and treat us accordingly.. only to be told keep up the good work & then close the door!
by tranottoc May 15, 2008 9:10 AM
I've read this garbage about Buc salaries since 1976 and it must be due to the magnetic location of the team affecting thinking. Remember Doug Williams? He hired on for 80 K and wanted 600 K and team offered 400 K and Doug went Bye- Bye . STUPID !

Garcia was on the street when the BUcs signed him last year and had no leverage. He outperformed his contract but vastly underperformed his contract in Cleveland. Did he give money back to the Browns? Play out the contract Jeff.

I think it's pretty clear what's going on here. This is Garcia's last year in Tampa. That's why we picked up Griese and drafted Johnson...add in McKown and that's a pretty decent qb situation. Give him a mil don't punish for clinching the div earl
by Jam May 14, 2008 5:24 PM
James, u r an idiot & Quentin look no further than our depth chart for Griese. We r tied to Garcia no matter the age but I could swear I remember #34 just being giddy about being on the field. Now he isn't showing up? I wouldn't be 2 comfy if I'm him
by Russ May 14, 2008 5:20 PM
Didn't Garcia miss three games due to injury. A problem in the past as well. Still would like to see him paid for his performance. How does his performance stack up against other QB's and their pay?
by James May 14, 2008 5:16 PM
Garcia's 7 wins came against teams that had a combined .383 winning percentage.
by JB May 14, 2008 4:33 PM
I second the "James is an idiot comment"
by Quentin May 14, 2008 3:20 PM
Somewhere out there, a smile creeps across Brian Griese's face.

ALL I hear is Jealousy!! Being a Pro Player is a business, each player is and individual finacial institution. During the off season is the time to negotiate. I have no problem w/ a player askng for moneY. A PLAYER IS WORTH WHAT HE CAN NEGOTIATE!! I wish some of u indiots who keep sayng these guys are over paid would say the same thing about the owners. How come its ok for the owners to continue to do business to increase their net worth but not the players? Oh and if one more person says, "if he had a bad season, he woudlnt give the money back" What about when a player has a good season and gets cut for salary cap reason for not taking a pay cut? What about that? If u sign a 5 year contract, that contract has to go both ways. owner and players both need to live up to it until contract is fulfilled or renegotiated.
by Lawrence May 14, 2008 2:30 PM
He is an average (at best) quarterback. Yes, he plays with a lot of heart and emotion and gives it his all, but he is a product of the system. He is 38, they would be stupid to dump a lot of money in him at this point. Signed contract - honor it!
by Mike May 14, 2008 1:21 PM
James, you are an idiot.
by Tony May 14, 2008 12:21 PM
Yes, they should pay him the bonus money he would have earned last year if they didn't sit him down the last two games. But continuing to gripe about it publicly will get him nowhere with Allen. Just ask Simeon Rice and Brian Kelly.
by Carmineb37 May 14, 2008 12:12 PM
They need to pay the man his $1 Million dollar bonus from last year, restructure his contract to ablout 4 mil a year for two years, and take care of Graham. They sucked an extra 17 a ticket from me this year, use that as well as everyother fans $$$$
by James May 14, 2008 11:59 AM
He's not better than McCown and Gradkowski would have won atleast 6 of the 7 games Garcia did. I hope Garcia doesn't show up and gives McCown that chance to take his job. Garcia will never see the field again.
by Mack May 14, 2008 11:58 AM
One other point. "Whining" might be defined as complaining about your wife making you take out the trash. Losing out on a million dollar incentive due to a dubious coaching decision is grounds for a legitiment gripe.
by DV May 14, 2008 11:58 AM
I for one would love to see new ownership of my Bucs.
by pigbroker May 14, 2008 11:57 AM
Let him go. We've got Jake Plummer.
by Mack May 14, 2008 11:53 AM
CEW, I think he was picked up after a pretty impressive run with Philly. They screwed him out of some incentive $.
by bob May 14, 2008 11:53 AM
let's just hope this is good negotiating and not fallout from the Manchester United spending spree...
by derek May 14, 2008 9:53 AM
I think there is a logical solution to this in that by nfl standards garcia is an average starting qb and he should be paid that way.. and as far as length extend him another year and see where he and the bucs are when hes 40... decent pay raise and
by derek May 14, 2008 9:53 AM
on another note isnt it ironic how bad players dont ever offer or complain how overpaid they are but let a guy have a decent season and they are ready to forget that decent deal they signed before
by John May 14, 2008 9:53 AM
I just dropped 5 Large on season tickets. I don't want to watch the Bucs struggle, again, at QB. Garcia is the difference between 9-7 and 7-9 or worse. This season's schedule is tougher. We need Gardia more than he needs us. Man up and pay him.
by Sim May 14, 2008 9:52 AM
Lets review: ticket prices have gone up, $30M under the cap, team made no big offseason moves, won't give any money to our good players. Hmmm...why did they raise prices again?? Are we turning into the Bengals??
by Paul May 14, 2008 9:52 AM
Don't count on all that salary cap money, it's probably going to England to pay the debts of Manchester United.
by David May 14, 2008 9:52 AM
Sure, why would you want to reward the guys who saved your jobs. Just when you get a good thing going you want to remind us about the money and power stink in football. <sigh>
by derek May 14, 2008 9:39 AM
and a little extension.. cant any player in any sport expect anything guaranteed after 40
by CEW May 14, 2008 9:39 AM
As has been said before. Garcia is all about the money. He didn't sign here before because more money was offered in Cleveland. Gruden picked him up off the trash heap in Detroit and as bad as he stunk it up in Detroit, he didn't offer them a refund.
