Cowboys interested in Simms if Bucs' price is right

LAKE BUENA VISTA — The Cowboys remain interested in trading for QB Chris Simms if the Bucs will lower their asking price of a midround draft pick.

The Cowboys are believed to have communicated their interest in May but the Bucs have insisted on a third- or fourth-round pick.

Simms has taken limited or no reps in seven-on-seven and team drills since starter Jeff Garcia arrived in training camp Monday.

"I understand the situation," Simms said Tuesday. "I don't know what the plan is, but I understand the situation.'

Simms, 27, has been throwing after practice with quarterbacks coach Greg Olson and rookie QB Josh Johnson. Simms is among five quarterbacks in training camp, including Brian Griese and Luke McCown.

Former Buc Brad Johnson is the Cowboys' No. 2 passer behind 28-year-old Tony Romo. Johnson turns 40 in September.

The Bears also are reportedly interested, although they may be waiting for Simms to be released.

Cox goes on IR: CB Torrie Cox, 27, will miss the season with a torn left ACL and was placed on injured reserve. It's the same injury Cox sustained during 2003 preseason, ending his rookie campaign. Cox, a special-teams contributor who was competing for a job at the nickel spot, was injured during Saturday's afternoon workout. He played in four games last season before tearing his right ACL and finished the season on IR.

Also Tuesday, RB Earnest Graham sprained his ankle and TE Ben Troupe suffered a blow to the head.

THE REPLACEMENTS: Coach Jon Gruden has Cox's roster spot to fill and said the club is doing its homework on former Cowboys WR Terry Glenn and former Chargers WR Eric Parker.

"I'm interested in anybody that's a good player. That's my job," Gruden said. "I don't want to start the controversy. But we're going to look into it and certainly do our work on (Glenn). Eric Parker just got released.

"You've got to have as many people as you can working on the field. We've had a couple offensive linemen in to work out. We might bring in a couple receivers. Who knows who we're going to bring in. But we'll fill that roster spot as soon as possible."

Parker, 29, missed last season with a toe injury and was cut several days before training camp. In five seasons with the Chargers, he caught 187 passes for 2,586 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Glenn, 34, missed 15 games last season with a knee injury. He was released when he refused to sign a split salary contract that would've paid him $500,000 if he were to re-injure that knee.

Glenn also is drawing interest from the Dolphins.

GALLOWAY GETTING CLOSE: WR Joey Galloway still has not made an appearance on the practice field because of a groin strain. But he might return soon. Gruden said Galloway ran some sprints Monday afternoon. "He ran 20 100-yard dashes (Monday) and he looked pretty good to me," Gruden said. "I wish I could've run them that fast. But we're still (holding Galloway out) today and probably tomorrow."
