TAMPA — Joey Galloway says a broken right foot is what forced him to miss five games.
Galloway suffered what was described at the time as a foot sprain against the Falcons in Week 2. Coach Jon Gruden has referred to Galloway as the ''White Tiger" for his rare appearances after the veteran receiver also missed training camp and the preseason with a groin strain.
But now that Galloway is healthy, he has had trouble earning playing time. In three games since returning, he has four catches for 60 yards, and he did not have a reception Sunday against the Vikings.
"I'm sure it is tough on him," Gruden said. "It's been tough on us. We've had to make a lot of adjustments, not only at running back but in our receiving corps. But he plays the same position that Antonio Bryant plays, and he can't deny the fact that Antonio is playing … really outstanding football. They're kind of stacked at the same position. We're trying our best to utilize them both, and we'll continue to do that.
"But Mike Clayton is having a solid year. His statistics may not say so, but put the tape on. He's really playing well, as is Ike Hilliard.…We're in the process of doing the best we can to use everybody."
Galloway revealed he had a broken foot on his weekly radio show. Asked Thursday if Galloway's injury was more serious than portrayed, Gruden said, "It was a six-week injury. I don't know how you portray anything. It was a six-week injury. I'll let him answer those questions. All I know is we play Detroit Sunday."
Quick study: RB Noah Herron, signed this week after Earnest Graham went on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain, could see action Sunday, especially on special teams.
"We could sure use some help," Gruden said. "That's why he's here. (Running backs coach) Rich Bisaccia's been meeting with him trying to teach him not only the offense, but special teams. He is a quick study. He's a smart guy, played in the league before.
"With his body, his size, he can help us on the punt team covering kicks and doing a lot of things. He's a guy we're evaluating and trying to coach up and bring up to speed as soon as we can."
Injuries: QB Brian Griese (elbow) and TE Alex Smith (ankle) did not practice. S Jermaine Phillips (broken forearm) was limited.

It's great that we have all of these receivers having such tremendous years according to Gruden, so why can't we score TD's?

Is there a Mr. Sympathy trophy? I would like to submit my vote for Coach Gruden immediately specifically for his response to Joey Galloway's 6 week injury. What a guy! Hide the true status and then throw it in the player's lap. A man's man.
