TAMPA — The Bucs continue to churn the bottom of their roster, opening up one spot on their active roster and three on their practice squad with cuts Tuesday.
The Bucs waived-injured LB James-Michael Johnson, who matched a team high with 20 special-teams snaps in Sunday's loss to the Titans. Johnson had been claimed off waivers from the Chiefs last week. No corresponding addition was announced Tuesday.
Tampa Bay also waived three from the practice squad — WR Kaelin Clay, the team's sixth-round draft pick in April; TE Cameron Brate, who had been among the team's final cuts, and T Martin Wallace, signed to the practice squad last week.
One spot was filled, as LB Julian Stanford signed to the practice squad after working out for the team last week. Stanford, 25, had 23 tackles with the Jaguars in 2012 and played extensively on special teams last season with the Lions, though he finished with more penalties (four) than special-teams tackles (two).
DT Derrick Lott, an undrafted rookie from Tennessee-Chattanooga, also joined the practice squad. Lott, 25, who had six sacks and 131/2 tackles for loss as a senior in 2014, spent the preseason with the Titans and was among their final cuts.
HELPING HANDS: Tuesday is an off day in a normal NFL week, but a dozen Bucs rookies took time to help during the lunch rush at Trinity Cafe, which serves about 300 meals a day to the community in Tampa.
"Any time I can take time out of my schedule to do stuff like this, I definitely will do it," said rookie QB Jameis Winston, who made his debut in Sunday's 42-14 loss to the Titans. "It's a special day for us. A man at my table said 'Keep your head up,' so it's a good day for me, a positive thing to know we still have people supporting us. You can't be selfish. There are a lot of people in need, good people … anytime I see someone I can help, I always hold my hand out."
Winston was joined by fellow rookies Donovan Smith, Ali Marpet, Kwon Alexander, Adam Humphries and Kyle Brindza, plus draft pick Kenny Bell and practice-squad members Donteea Dye, Rannell Hall, Josh Keyes, Imoan Claiborne and Jude Adjei-Barimah. They signed autographs, met with guests, and got involved helping. Players donned aprons and plastic gloves, helped serve meals, refill drinks and clear tables as part of a busy lunch that is served year-round.
