Hall of Fame visitor

Hall of Fame DT Warren Sapp (below) visited training camp Saturday and will return today for his report on the team for the NFL Network. Sapp, an analyst for the network, said the Bucs have some good pieces for new coach Lovie Smith to work with. It was clear the Bucs were as happy to see Sapp as he was to get a close look at his former team.

"It's hard not to know that Warren is in the house," Smith said. "But it seemed like old times. I turn around, and, 'Hey, Love.' It took me back to '96. I look around, and I see (former Bucs LB) Hardy Nickerson there.

"But Warren Sapp, I loved every day I was around him; seeing not just how a Hall of Famer plays, but Warren Sapp practiced as hard as anyone. For a defensive lineman, when he comes around, it has to pick you up a little bit."

'Nothing major'

Second-year CB Rashaan Melvin, who was working with the second-team defense, injured his ankle during a long touchdown pass from Mike Glennon to WR Tommy Streeter. While he did not return to practice, Smith said all injuries sustained Saturday were "nothing major." Undrafted rookie Keith Lewis replaced Melvin, lining up opposite former USF star Mike Jenkins.

Big plays

LB Brandon Magee, signed just as camp started, and S Mark Barron had interceptions during passing drills. WR Vincent Jackson caught a long touchdown down the sideline from Josh McCown, beating CB Alterraun Verner. Verner also had a breakup on a short pass, and Smith said he was "pretty pumped" to learn Verner had experience as a backup punt returner from his time with the Titans.

Quote of the day

"We're not Carolina Panther-ready right now, but we are getting a little closer to that."
