ARLINGTON, Texas — Kai Forbath hit a 40-yard field goal in the first drive of overtime and Washington's defense stuffed Dallas on four downs on the following drive as the Redskins stunned the Cowboys 20-17 on Monday night.

Native Texan Colt McCoy threw for 299 yards and ran for a 7-yard touchdown to give Washington a 17-10 lead in the fourth quarter. Starter Robert Griffin III was inactive so McCoy, who replaced backup Kirk Cousins last week, was named the starter.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo departed with an apparent back injury after being sacked midway through the third quarter but returned for one drive in regulation and the lone Dallas drive in overtime.

Brandon Weeden led the Cowboys to 10 points while Romo was out, including a touchdown to tight end Jason Witten to tie it at 17. The score was still tied when Romo, who had back surgery in the offseason, jogged back on the field with 1:52 left in regulation and Dallas backed up to its 3.

Chiefs: Quarterback Alex Smith sprained his throwing shoulder late in the first half Sunday against the Rams. Smith played every snap, he completed 24 of 28 passes for 226 yards in a 34-7 rout, and never mentioned the injury in his postgame remarks. "He was able to obviously go through the game and everything worked out okay, but a bit sore today," coach Andy Reid said. Reid said Smith went through a series of examinations Monday and there was no substantial damage to the shoulder.

Vick to start: Jets coach Rex Ryan said Michael Vick will start at quarterback over Geno Smith Sunday against the Chiefs. Ryan said the decision isn't "any long-term deal or whatever," but said it is "the right decision for this time." Also, with the team on a seven-game losing streak, general manager John Idzik said he blames himself for the mess. "My performance to date is unsatisfactory," Idzik said during his annual state-of-the team address. "It has been a direct reflection of our record."

Bad celebration ends season: Bears defensive end Lamarr Houston is out for the season after he ruptured his right ACL while celebrating a late sack in Sunday's blowout loss to New England. Houston jumped and landed awkwardly after sacking Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo — with the Bears trailing by 25 with about 3 minutes left. General manager Phil Emery said the team is "disappointed for him and in him."

Chargers: Former Redskins cornerback Richard Crawford signed and corner Richard Marshall was released, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Giants: Middle linebacker Jon Beason, who has played only three games, is out for the season and needs surgery on his right foot.

Lions: Defensive tackle Nick Fairley will miss 4-5 weeks with MCL and PCL injuries in his right knee, ESPN reported.

Panthers: Coach Ron Rivera said he expects running back DeAngelo Williams to play Thursday night against the Saints. Williams has missed six games this season.

Rams: Offensive tackle Jake Long has a torn ACL and is out for the season, profootballtalk.com reported.
