Rookie Geno Smith will start at quarterback Sunday against the Bucs, the Jets said Wednesday.
Smith, 22, a second-round pick out of West Virginia, earned the nod partly due to Mark Sanchez's right shoulder injury sustained Aug. 24 against the Giants.
"We're excited," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "It's going to be a big day for him."
Smith's preseason included a sprained right ankle. Ryan said Smith can "drive the football" better now and has done outstanding preparation.
Said Smith: "I am extremely proud."
