Kickin' back | Michael Bennett

Kickin' back with Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Michael Bennett

I'm wondering what Sundays are like with you and your brother (Cowboys TE Martellus Bennett) often playing at the same time.

Yeah, we talk to each other on Sunday all the time. We talk before and after the game. He'll tell me about the guys I'm playing against, and I'll tell him if I know anything about who he's playing against. We say, "Do this, do that." That kind of thing.

I'm sure you have emotions when you're playing. But do you get anxious when you're watching him play, too?

Oh, yeah. I just really want to see him do well. I want to see him catch the ball. But we're also real honest with each other. I'll text him during the game with comments like, "You should have made that play, man." We really root for each other. Family is the most important thing.

So, tell me what it was like when you played backyard football.

A lot of guys who play in the NFL lived in our neighborhood. (Rams receiver) Donnie Avery is from there, too. We had some pretty good games.

Would you play on the same team or opposite teams?

We just made sure one of us was a captain, and then you got to pick the teams. That way we made sure we ended up on the same team. I was always the quarterback. He was always a receiver. I'd pretty much look for him when I threw it.

Here's one of my weekly questions: What are you playing most on your iPod these days?

I would say Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and Gucci Mane.

My other weekly question is what Web site do you visit most? It's a black gossip site. My girlfriend went to it one time, and I've been on it ever since. I just go there to see what's going on. I just sit there and laugh all the time.

What's the funniest thing you've seen on there?

There was this clip with (celebrity cook) Paula Deen getting hit in the face by a turkey (actually, a ham). Now, that's funny.

Not sure why she's on a black gossip site, but whatever. Is it because she cooks kind of like black folks?

That's her, man. Put some grease on it. She cooks everything with grease. She fries everything. If she was a little lighter, I could go for her. That's the perfect woman.

Speaking of TV stars, you watch a lot of television series, right?

I do, but you know what I watch as much as those series? I like politics and current events. I'm always watching CNN or MSNBC trying to keep up with what's going on in the world. I even watch Glenn Beck. Even though I don't like him, I still like watching his show. I just like to see what makes people tick. I like to know what others think. I've always been an observer. I like watching Locked Up to see what makes people do what they do. Why do killers become killers?

That's interesting. What are the TV series that you can't miss?

I can't miss Prison Break, Supernatural. … I used to like Smallville until it got ridiculous. (The character) was in high school for like 20 years, it seemed.

So, if there's a football game on and Prison Break is also on, there's no chance of you watching football?

No, because football is my job. I've never been the kind of person who just likes sports and that's all.

How full is your DVR right now?

What? It's always full. When I used to live back home, my mom would always fuss like, "Come on, man!" I'm a simple guy. My girlfriend and me, we travel a little, and I'm fine just sitting in the (hotel) room. We went to London (with the Bucs) and really just sat in the room. Everybody else wants to see the world. Hey, once you've seen one big monument, you've seen them all. You ever notice people tell you about things that you just have to see and then you see it, and it never lives up to the hype?

There's a lot of hype on TV, especially reality TV. You're not a fan of that, I assume?

Yeah. The world is so different right now. You can do one small thing. You don't have to be special. It used to be you had to be like an Academy Award winner. Now, you can get famous from being on YouTube. It's so different now.

Would you be okay with being famous for something, well, stupid?

I've always said I'd rather be famous for doing something good or positive.

You say you're not really a big traveler, but what gets you out of the house?

I like to get out of the house to do some outdoors stuff, like fishing. But I do not get on boats. No. In Texas, we get out and fish at the lakes. We do a lot of riding on four-wheelers, too. I like to shoot guns; we hunt deer, quail. Back at Texas A&M, a lot of guys there had shotguns. A lot of people would get up in the mornings at like 5 a.m. and go duck hunting. When the sun came up, you were already out there. It was fun.
