Talk of the town
Five topics suitable for inane debate on talk radio.
1. A new low: That was officially the most lopsided loss ever for the Bucs at Raymond James Stadium. The only time the Bucs have ever been outscored by more at home was a 44-9 loss to the Bears at the old Tampa Stadium in 1984.
2. To the losers go the spoils: Follow the logic here. Tampa Bay is one of the worst teams in the NFL. And the defense is worse than the offense. And the line is the defense's weakest link. Ergo, this defensive line may be the worst unit in the NFL. The Bucs cannot rush the quarterback, and the run defense is at the bottom of the league. Which means you may want to pay attention to Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh and Oklahoma's Gerald McCoy because they look like the best defensive tackles in the draft.
3. Job review: A red flag came out of the owner's box in the third quarter, but the Bucs had no challenges left.
4. Mercy killing: This one could have been far worse. The Saints were without running back Reggie Bush and both starting cornerbacks. Then, when they got a big lead in the second half, they called runs on 22 of their final 24 plays.
5. Blame Ray Perkins for this one: John Carney's first NFL field goal was as a 24-year-old rookie with the Bucs in 1988. His field goal Sunday for the Saints was his 472nd, third most in NFL history. The Bucs have used 13 other kickers in the regular season since Carney was cut at camp in 1989.
A list of five
Five ways the defense could use help.
5. Look for the call from the sideline — then do the opposite.
4. Look for players on waivers and University of Tennessee arrest reports.
3. Two words: brass knuckles.
2. Fire Sam Wyche. Hey, it worked once.
1. Hmm, maybe look into this sack thingamajig.
Five worst home blowouts
1. Chicago 44, Tampa Bay 9 on Oct. 21, 1984: Bucs were playing for a share of the NFC Central lead that day. Instead they were hammered and went on to finish 6-10 in John McKay's final season.
2. New Orleans 38, Tampa Bay 7 on Nov. 22, 2009: If you believe the announced attendance of 62,270 Sunday, it was the biggest crowd to see a loss of 30 points or more in Tampa Bay history.
3. Green Bay 34, Tampa Bay 3 on Sept. 1, 1996: Tony Dungy's first game as a head coach was his worst home loss in Tampa Bay.
4. Detroit 38, Tampa Bay 7 on Oct. 25, 1992: This one briefly cost Vinny Testaverde his starting job and turned out to be one of his final appearances in Tampa Bay.
5. Minnesota 49, Tampa Bay 20 on Oct. 23, 1988: Testaverde throws six interceptions and the Bucs rush for 28 yards.
Five lousy picks
Checking out the best bets for the first pick in the 2010 draft.
1. Bucs (1-9): Big day for Tampa Bay! Lions, Raiders and Chiefs screw up by winning.
2. Rams (1-9): Could take themselves out of contention by beating Seattle next week.
3. Browns (1-9): Blowing a 24-3 lead against Detroit should count as two losses.
4. Lions (2-8): Matthew Stafford outshines Josh Freeman this week.
5. Bills (3-7): Extra credit for firing the head coach.
Final five words
Welcome to the NFL, Josh.
