TAMPA — The Storm clinched a home playoff game in unlikely fashion Saturday, recovering on onside kick in the final minute and scoring with 10 seconds left to defeat Washington 55-51 before an announced 9,913 at Amalie Arena.
Tampa Bay (8-2) was down 51-41 with a minute left against a Valor team that had dropped eight straight. But Storm WR Michael Lindsey caught a touchdown pass with 40 seconds left. Mark Lewis' ensuing onside kick hit off a Washington player before being recovered by Tampa Bay's LaRoche Jackson with 37 seconds left.
Quarterback Randy Hippeard (24-of-37, 250 yards) then found receiver Kendrick Ings from the 6-yard line with the winning score to cap a seven-play, 40-yard drive with 10.8 seconds left. Ings had 11 catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns.
With the win, Tampa Bay wrapped up no worse than the No. 2 seed and will host a playoff game Aug. 14 at 7.
