LAND O'LAKES — Land O'Lakes' crucial 42-14 win over rival Sunlake may also be looked back on as a game the Gators would rather not remember, as star defensive lineman Gary Myrick was ejected in the third quarter Friday after a personal foul.
"(Myrick) was ejected from the game, and well-deserved, and it looks like he may be out a couple games for us," Land O'Lakes coach Matt Kitchie said.
Myrick, who transferred from Nature Coast in the offseason, stepped on a Sunlake player in the beginning of the third quarter with 11:01 left after Jacob Jackson's 54-yard touchdown pass to Jamal Jones.
"I just stepped on the kid and got back up and then they ejected me," Myrick said after the game.
The suspension may prove critical in next week's matchup with Mitchell, which lost to Pasco on Friday night.
Land O'Lakes (7-1, 5-1) woke up in the second half after being up only 14-0 at halftime. Gators quarterback Stevie Weatherford turned it up in the second half, going 8-of-11 for 122 yards and throwing three touchdowns to senior wide receiver Alex Robinson (10 catches, 182 yards). Weatherford finished 18-of-27 for 326 yards and four scores and rushed for 84 yards and two more touchdowns.
Sunlake (3-5, 3-3) kept the game close in the third quarter on some nifty plays by Jackson (5-of-19, 89 yards). He scored on a 4-yard run to close the gap to 21-14 with 5:10 left in the third, but the Gators went on a 21-0 run to close out the win.
