Around the county in 30 days A daily spring preview of every football program in the county Armwood Coach: Sean Callahan (19th season, 144-67) Last season: 13-1 (district champion, advanced to Class 4A state semifinal) District: Class 4A-11 (Freedom, Hillsborough, Middleton, Tampa Bay Tech) Key losses: OL Juan Gorostiaga; LB Chris Greene; DE Sergio Joyner; OL/DL Matt Patchan; RB Eric Smith Who's back: LB Casey Callahan; FB Matt Eastman; DE Ryne Giddins; DB Angelo Hadley; C Dillard Hurley; QB Mywan Jackson; WR Rob Jones; LB Petey Smith, right What's new: The offense … and the defense. After running the triple option for years, the Hawks have installed a shotgun offense in which they plan to throw 15-20 times a game. This should allow Armwood to utilize the talents of Jackson and the squad's truckload of speedy backs and receivers. Defensively, the 4-3 is gone and the 3-4 is in. In it, Giddins, one of the country's top recruits, will often be used as a standup outside linebacker. Audibles: With the 3-4, "we should be better against spread offenses and that's what many of the best teams run." — Matt Thompson, Armwood defensive coordinator Did you know? Armwood's offensive coaches spent spring break visiting various colleges throughout the South that use the shotgun to learn more about it. Spring game May 22 vs. Durant (at Newsome) 2008 schedule Aug. 29 at Lakeland Lake Gibson Sept. 5 at Plant Sept. 12 vs. Wharton Sept. 19 at Brandon Sept. 26 at Newsome Oct. 3 vs. Jefferson Oct. 10 vs. Tampa Bay Tech Oct. 16 vs. Plant City Oct. 24 at Hillsborough Oct. 31 at Freedom Nov. 7 vs. Middleton Keith Niebuhr, Times staff writer
