Around the county in 30 days

A daily spring preview of every football program in the county.

Boca Ciega

Coach: Stevie Thomas (third season, 13-8)

Last season: 8-3 (lost to Jefferson in the region quarterfinals)

District: Class 4A-9 (Bradenton Bayshore, Bradenton Southeast, Lakewood, Northeast, Osceola)

Key losses: OL/DL Cody Hampton, ATH Javonte Trotter, PK Randall Klafter, LB George Durant, DL Johnny Hartsfield, QB/DB Orhian Johnson

Who's back: Bogie lost a talented, game-changing group of seniors, and it probably won't be able to find the same quality this year — with the exception of DE Julius Forte, who will be one of the county's most hotly recruited players. Darrian Skinner returns, and if he doesn't start at QB he'll be a top WR, and Darius Johnson, Jacquez Jackson and Lavontae Armstrong will form a talented but unproven backfield.

What's new: Thomas is high on rising sophomore QB Shaquille Slaughter, who could be the starter in the fall.

Audibles: "We need to find some linemen, especially on the offensive side." — Thomas

Did you know? The Pirates have never made the playoffs in consecutive seasons.

Francis will be their biggest loss

There are alot more key losses than those noted but unfortunately Coach Thomas did not give credit to his O line. He only recognized a few key players and so alot of real talent was ignored. It looks like he will keep up the same tradition again.

I believe the preseason game is Ridge High School in Davenport, FL. (Polk County)
