Canterbury: Spring football capsule

Around the county in 30 days A daily spring preview of every football program in the county. Canterbury Coach: Steve Dudley (second season, 5-4) Last season: 5-4 District: Independent Key losses: RB/LB Joey Cuda, QB/DB Brandon Hamilton, WR Johnny Lancaster Who's back: OL/DL Taylor Campbell, FB/DL Jeremy Dolan, OL/DL Lee Hanna, WR Ryan Laurent, OL/DL Micah Madir, QB/DB Dominique Thornton, OL/DL Michael Woolfenden What's new: Since the program's inception in 2005, Canterbury has always gone the independent route. The Crusaders still will not play a district schedule, but they will belong to the Sunshine State Conference, made up of eight small private schools in the area. That will allow Canterbury to play a 10-game schedule for the first time. The Crusaders could contend in the conference thanks to a veteran offensive line. Madir is the biggest body at 6 feet 3, 275 pounds. Dolan, a standout on the defensive line, will get a chance to start at fullback. Thornton takes over at quarterback. That should help offset the loss of a trio of skill players — Cuda, Hamilton and Lancaster — who graduate. Audibles: "We lose a lot in the skill positions, and we will be somewhat young with only three seniors. But have a good core. We'll have to rely a lot on the offensive and defensive lines." — Dudley Did you know?: The Crusaders won two games by forfeit last year, which helped them finish 5-4 and have a winning record for the second straight season. Spring game: May 22 vs. Carrollwood Day School 2008 schedule: Sept. 5 at Academy of the Lakes Sept. 12 bye Sept. 19 vs. Boca Raton Christian Sept. 26 at Bishop McLaughlin Oct. 3 vs. West Palm Beach Summitt Christian Oct. 10 vs. Lakeland Christian Oct. 17 bye Oct. 24 at Mount Dora Bible Nov. 1 at Bradenton St. Stephen's Nov. 1 at Hernando Christian Nov. 7 Carrollwood Day School Bob Putnam, Times staff writer
