Armwood RB declared ineligible for '08 season

SEFFNER — Armwood running back Sir Chauncey Holloway, expected to be one of the area's top players at his position, has been ruled ineligible for the 2008 season by the Florida High School Athletic Association.

Holloway, who transferred to Armwood from Plant City in January and was slated to be the starting tailback, had listed a false home address upon transferring. That violates FHSAA bylaw 11.12.2, which states, "A student who falsifies information to gain eligibility status that causes a member school to violate eligibility rules of (the FHSAA) shall be declared ineligible to represent any member school for a period of one year from the date of the discovery of the violation."

The ruling means Holloway, a rising senior, cannot play at any school in the state this year. In a letter to Armwood dated June 9, the FHSAA wrote:

"According to the investigator's report (previously sent to you), (Holloway's father) admits that he fabricated the entire 'scenario.' The scenario involved a friend of Mr. Holloway posing as the student's father. The 'friend' resided in the AHS attendance zone, and allowed the student and the student's father to use that address to enroll the student at AHS. The student did not reside at the residence used to be enrolled at AHS."

Said Armwood coach Sean Callahan, "The bottom line is that he does not live at the address he and his parents said he lived at."

Armwood was cleared of any wrongdoing.

"The FHSAA does not have a problem with Armwood High School … and does not have a problem with Sean Callahan," Callahan said.

When reached Monday morning, Holloway, though upset, did not dispute the FHSAA's finding. But, he said he may appeal.

"They're right," Holloway said. "It was my dad. He was the one who did it. We're still trying to fight (the ruling). There was a lot going on at Plant City. They treated me wrong."

Holloway was Plant City's leading rusher last season, totaling 972 yards and nine touchdowns. He was expected to be a key contributor this fall for the Hawks.

"I feel bad for Sir Chauncey," Callahan said. "He was a very good football player and a great kid."

Plant City reported the FHSAA of the possible violation in May.

"The FHSAA came down here and did a great job," Callahan said. "It was very fair, very professional. They interviewed (Armwood assistant principal Don Hill), myself and Sir Chauncey, and interviewed the parents and the whole bit."
