Around the county in 30 days A daily spring preview of every football program in the county
Clearwater Central Catholic
Coach: Mike Jalazo (eighth season, 53-33)
Last season: 5-5
District: Class A, District 6 (Berkeley Prep, Fort Meade, Indian Rocks Christian, Lakeland Christian)
Key losses: OL/DL Alan Akins, QB/DB Ian Coia, TE/DL Paul Freedman, OL/DL Joe Larach, RB/DB Micah Poole, RB/LB Danny Siegel, WR/DB Chris Taylor, RB/DB Bobby Zagers
Who's back: RB/DB Kyle Massey, QB/LB Eric Miller, QB/DB Nick Newton, QB/WR Patrick O'Brien, OL/DL Alec Petrocelli, OL/DL Blair Vaughn, OL/DL Chase Vaughn
What's new: The Marauders were hurt by injuries with Newton and receiver/defensive back Dan Higinbotham going down with knee injuries in Week 3 last season. Both are back and healthy. That gives CCC some weapons for Miller, the returning starting quarterback. Tim Swinehart and Massey will handle the rushing load. The strength on offense is the line with Blair and Chase Vaughn back, as well as Petrocelli, Phil Focaraci and Greg Rein. The Marauders have to replace the entire defensive backfield, but Jalazo said he still feels good about that unit with Newton and Higinbotham returning and Graham Brown and Sakai Wilson playing more. Swinehart, Massey and Brett Lawton are the linebackers. Petrocelli and the Vaughns will help anchor the defensive line.
Audible: "Eric Miller has really taken to the next level as a quarterback, and I think we're going to be real good up front on the offensive line. The key is to avoid the same kind of injuries we had last season." — Jalazo
Did you know? The Marauders had 10 players from last year's team sign with colleges.
