Dunedin hired longtime East Lake assistant Todd Brooks to take over the football program, Falcons athletic director Matt Warner said on Friday.

Brooks replaces Matt LePain, who stepped down last month after going 2-18 in two seasons as coach.

For the past 15 years, Brooks was a teacher and coach at East Lake. From 2001-06, he was the junior varsity football coach. He has been as assistant with the Eagles' varsity program ever since and associate head coach the past two years. During his tenure, East Lake has become a consistent playoff contender and made the state semifinals in 2013 and '14.

"Coach Brooks believes in building the student-athlete toward being successful after high school, whether it is in college or the work force," Warner said in a news release. "He will accomplish this by emphasizing the most important aspects of team work, trust, responsibility and accountability. Coach Brooks will focus on developing these traits in his students in the hallways, in the classrooms, on the practice and game fields and throughout the community."

Brooks lives in Dunedin. His wife, Michelle, teaches first grade at Curlew Creek Elementary. They have two sons, Daniel, 17, and Joshua, 15.
