RIVERVIEW — Atrocious special-teams play by Riverview (1-4) was a factor all night long, as Durant (5-1) found itself with a short field time and again. In the first quarter, a blocked punt had the Cougars deep in Sharks territory. Two plays later Antonio Morris scored to put the Cougars up 7-0.
Riverview immediately responded with an 11-play, 80-yard scoring drive that consisted of all rushing plays. Back-to-back big runs by Ronnie Johnson and Terrance Carter put the Sharks in position, and Johnson finished the drive with a 1-yard plunge. Jerrid Heffers scored on the two-point conversion attempt to put the Sharks up 8-7.
In the third quarter the Cougars put together a 10-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown run by John Hicks.
"That was a huge drive," coach Mike Gottman said. "I told them, 'We don't score, game's over.' "
