ST. PETERSBURG — Cambridge Christian (3-1) pulled out a tight 21-18, Class 2A win at Admiral Farragut (1-3) on Friday.
Farragut running back Khalan Tolson (125 yards) scored touchdowns in the first and third quarters.
Cambridge quarterback Jaylin Jackson connected with Andrew Cunningham (60 yards) and Ricky Mann (59 yards) to put pressure on the AFA defense.
Both teams battled in the fourth quarter for the lead, but Jackson's touchdown followed by an interception from Sergey Fitzgerald at the 50-yard line sealed it for the Lancers.
STARS OF THE GAME: Jackson and Cunningham both made game-changing plays. "I just came out ready to play tonight. I knew the guys on Farragut were big and fast, so I just kept telling myself to play hard and run hard, no matter what," Jackson said.
PLAY OF THE GAME: In the fourth quarter with the score 18-13 in favor of Farragut, a personal foul put the Lancers back to the 17-yard line. Jackson could not find an open receiver and ran straight through the Blue Jacket defense to the end zone. The Lancers converted the two-point conversion on Jackson's pass to Caleb Young.
FINAL WORD: "When we played Superior Collegiate last week, we gave up 58 points and kind of got depleted. Although we struggled in the first half and turned the ball over five times, had two interceptions and three fumbles, our defense bailed us out of a couple holes tonight. I just kept telling them, 'If we can protect the ball and keep playing the defense that we are playing, we will be in this game and not falter.' " — Cambridge coach Bob Dare
