Football: Clearwater Central Catholic 49, St. Petersburg Catholic 7

CLEARWATER — Clearwater Central Catholic took care of business during Saturday's blazing hot district contest with St. Petersburg Catholic.

The Marauders jumped out early in this one, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter before SPC could even record a first down. The power run game of the Marauders (5-0, 1-0) was simply too much to handle as the Marauders rolled to a 49-7 win.

Key play: After two straight scoring drives of pounding the ball, the momentum was already heavily in the Marauders' favor. Then they drew up a perfect trick play, tossing a quick screen to running back Jerjuan Newton who then stopped, threw across his body downfield to Bailey Brooks. Brooks made a sensational grab, high pointing the ball over a defender, breaking the tackle and walking into the end zone for a 50-yard touchdown. The Marauders led 21-0 at that point.

Stars of the game: Sophomore running back Johnny Newton put on a show with 123 yards and two touchdowns on only four carries. He had carries of 15 yards, 30 yards, a 33-yard touchdown and 45-yard touchdown. His brother, Jerjuan, added a 2-yard rushing touchdown to go with his 50-yard TD pass. Five different running backs saw the end zone for Clearwater Central Catholic as T.J. McEady recorded a 30-yard score, Thanh Trac had a 9-yard one and Casey Levy added the final score of the game from two yards out.

Final word: "Real pleased with the effort today. We have a ton of hard-working guys on this team. We played hard and we got better today which is always the main focus. We have some execution to work on and clean up but overall very happy with our performance." — CCC coach Chris Harvey
