ST. PETERSBURG — St. Petersburg won a sloppy battle of penalties and turnovers Friday in a 28-18 victory over Gibbs.
After a scoreless first quarter, Lennard took a 6-0 lead when Nick Lasteres found Grant Farley for a 2-yard touchdown pass. The Longhorns' primary source of offense was Victor Williams, Kelton Hallback and AJ Pursley combining for 64 yards rushing. Pursley found the end zone on a 2-yard rush late in the first half.
With its second possession of the third quarter, Gibbs cut the deficit with a 19-yard run from Emmanuel Stewart. The Gladiators followed that with an onside kick recovery. Stewart finished with 102 yards receiving. The majority of those yards came on a 79-yard touchdown from Patric Jones. The Gibbs quarterback used that play to catch fire in the second half and finished 5-of-9 with 136 yards and two touchdowns.
The Gladiators put the game away with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Maurice Hall.
