TAMPA — Hillsborough scored 24 points in a 4-1/2-minute span to break open a tight game in a 40-12 victory over Gaither on Friday.
Gaither (2-3) outgained Hillsborough (3-2) in total yardage 248-217. But the Terriers pulled away after the Cowboys unsuccessfully gambled in the final 30 seconds of the third quarter. Trailing 12-0 and facing fourth and 6 at its 24, Gaither lost the ball on downs following an incomplete pass. Tim Randolph (87 yards on 17 carries, two touchdowns) scored two plays later from 12 yards out, the first of three Terrier touchdowns over the next three minutes.
Charles Lovett's 2-yard run and Shawn Bryant's 24-yard interception return pushed Hillsborough's lead to 33-0. Gaither quarterback Shug Oyegunle accounted for both TDs on a run and pass. He totaled 200 yards total offense.
