Football: Hudson 15, Wesley Chapel 6

WESLEY CHAPEL — It did not take a whole lot of offense to decide the first district game of the season for Hudson and Wesley Chapel. The biggest battle of the night Friday was field position in the Cobras' 15-6 victory.

After each team went four and out on its opening possession, the Cobras (3-1, 1-0) had a long drive going that started at their 22. But a fumble inside the red zone gave the Wildcats first and 10 from their 8.

On the second play from the 8, Scott Edwards and wideout Eric Bennett connected on a 92-yard pass down the sideline to give Wesley Chapel a 6-0 lead.

Hudson's next possession resulted in another four and out but on the punt the Wildcats (0-4, 0-1) could not field the ball cleanly, allowing Hudson to recover and setting up first and 10 from the 40.

Eight plays and 31/2 minutes later, quarterback Joey Caruso ran up the middle for a 4-yard score then made the two-point conversion for an 8-6 lead.

Hudson put the game away with 4:25 remaining when Zach Russell capped an eight-play drive with a dazzling 21-yard touchdown.

TAMPA — No player works as closely with Jameis Winston as the center. Only those two touch the ball on every play. Together they make — if you will — snap judgements about defensive alignments.
