ST. PETERSBURG — In starting district play 3-0, Indian Rocks Christian outscored 2A-5 opponents 109-6.

Canterbury, with only one district loss, was supposed to offer a stiffer challenge.

Instead, the Golden Eagles dished out more of the same Friday in the team's most complete victory this season.

IRC scored touchdowns on six of its seven first-half drives, returned a punt for a score and an interception too in a 55-0 whipping of the Crusaders.

"We're on a roll," coach Mark Buchanan said. "When we start fast like this, these young kids just feed off of it. We're just having fun playing football. This is a great, young football team. I don't know if they understand what they can do yet, but it's going to be a fun ride here the next few weeks."

IRC (5-2, 4-0) used a punishing ground attack and smothering defense to dismantle the Crusaders (5-2, 3-2). The Golden Eagles outgained Canterbury 404-3 on the ground and averaged nearly 12 yards a carry.

"The guards got to the linebackers, and it was easy," IRC running back Zeke McGaughy said. "It was all about the offensive line.

Theo Anderson capped IRC's opening drive with a 7-yard run and added a 2-yard scoring burst on the second for a 14-0 lead. McGaughy took a sweep off the right side into the end zone from 7 yards out to make it 21-0 by the end of the first quarter.

Daniel Llerena scored on a sweep over the left side for an 18-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter. On the Golden Eagles' next drive, Damian King broke a trio of tackles and outraced the secondary for a 65-yard score.

"Coach told us to come out fast and attack," King said. "I guess they weren't ready for it."

On Canterbury's next offensive play, Chris Licea intercepted Josh Belton's pass and returned it 18 yards to increase the lead to 41-0. McGaughy (14 carries, 186 yards) sprinted for an 80-yard touchdown, and King (five carries, 106 yards) added a 58-yard punt return to make it 55-0 at halftime.
