TAMPA — Vincent Testaverde threw two touchdowns, and Kevin Newman racked up more than 200 total yards of offense as Jesuit bounced back from last week's loss with a 31-7 win over Lakewood Ranch.
The Jesuit defense was dominant throughout. The only Lakewood Ranch touchdown came in bizarre fashion. After a botched punt snap landed all the way back in its end zone, Lakewood Ranch quarterback Chad Rex scooped up the ball, scrambled and found wideout James Jeffcoat for a 77-yard TD pass.
After that, it was all Jesuit.
"After seeing this team (Lakewood Ranch) put up 55 points last week against Southeast, I told our guys that we had to be ready or they could come in here and embarrass us," said Matt Thompson, who notched his first victory as Jesuit coach.
Jesuit next takes on Clearwater Central Catholic.
"These first four games are really tough for us," Thompson said. But we've got a tough bunch of guys and I know we're up for the challenge."
