ST. PETERSBURG — Lakewood (1-1) bounced back from Week 1's surprising upset with a 20-13 win over Palmetto on Friday.
The Spartans' offensive weapons tend to get most of the hype, but the defense came up big with key stops throughout the game. The Spartans finally got on the board when Romello Presely scored on a 16-yard run to put the Spartans up 7-0. Palmetto came back with a score of its own on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Sean Ellison to Brian Waiters to make it 7-6 after the extra point was blocked.
Palmetto struck again when Joshua Hicks outran his defenders for a 78-yard touchdown to put the Tigers up 13-7. In the fourth quarter Ryan Davis hit Jocqui Ellison on a 10-yard strike to give the Spartans a 14-13 lead. Davis sealed the win when he ran untouched 35 yards for the final margin.
"We've got a long way to go and we are getting better every day," coach Cory Moore said. "Now we can concentrate on St. Pete."
