GIBSONTON — Unlike most defensive coordinators who implore their players to fall on a fumble, Spoto coach Dale Caparaso has a different motto.
"I want them to take it the other way," he said. "We preach it and we believe it."
Donald Smith got the memo. He stripped an East Bay ballcarrier and followed his coaches' instructions, returning the fumble 66 yards for a touchdown with just less than six minutes left to put the final touches on a 20-0 win.
East Bay (0-3) outgained Spoto 219-214 in total offensive yardage, but the Spartans allowed the Indians into the red zone only once.
Addison (7-of-19, 86 yards) put the Spartans (2-1) up 6-0 at half, capping an eight-play, 41-yard drive with a 4-yard keeper.
East Bay's Junior Nemorin led all rushers with 94 yards on 15 carries.
