TAMPA — With rain steadily falling, Middleton could not start a winning streak after picking up its first victory in a year last week. Spoto clung to an early lead for its first win of the season.
On the first play from scrimmage a Middleton fumble into the end zone resulted in Spoto recovering for a safety. Later in the quarter, the Spartans' Andrew Henry scrambled 12 yards for the game's only touchdown.
The Middleton offense only ran six plays in the first quarter. The Tigers were penalized 11 times and added eight fumbles, half of which were lost.
Despite the offense's bad performance, the Tigers defense had many strong moments. Spoto had a chance to put the game out of reach, but Middleton recovered a fumble on the goal line. The Tigers had one more chance to tie with the ball at midfield with two minutes to go but the offense could not capitalize.
