ST. PETERSBURG — A close game at halftime quickly turned into a rout as St. Petersburg defeated Dixie Hollins 52-27.
The Green Devils extended a three-point advantage to 10 when they scored on the opening possession of the third quarter. Deangelo Reeves capped a seven-play drive with a 36-yard run.
St. Petersburg (6-2, 1-1) then blocked a Dixie Hollins punt, and Josh Hall took it 30 yards into the end zone. A third Green Devils touchdown in the third quarter put them up by 24.
Early in the fourth quarter, Dixie Hollins quarterback Tyrie Adams connected with Marcus Smith to keep the Rebels' hopes for a comeback alive.
But St. Petersburg didn't let up, as Lionel Hart and senior Chris Ervin each rushed for scores.
Dixie Hollins (2-6, 0-2) led twice early. Adams found Davontae Harrington for a 52-yard score. A roughing the kicker penalty had given the Rebels another set of downs after they had been forced to punt.
The Rebels took the lead once more when Adams and Jacquez Hill teamed up for a 34-yard touchdown. Dixie Hollins went to the air 40 times; however, two interceptions by St. Petersburg led to 10 points. A field goal by Parker Bryant just before the half gave the Green Devils the lead.
