Football: Tampa Catholic 49, Gibbs 20

ST. PETERSBURG — Tampa Catholic scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to pull away from Gibbs and earn a 49-20 win in a non-district game Friday.

Quarterback Austin Sessums rushed for two touchdowns and threw another as the Crusaders (4-2) won their fourth straight game heading into a matchup with Lakeland Christian on Thursday that could decide the Class 3A, District 4 champion.

Devan Barrett rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and Ahmarean Brown scored two touchdowns.

Gibbs (1-6) got two touchdowns from Quandale Inmon.

Key drive: After Inmon's second touchdown made the score 21-20, Tampa Catholic answered with a physical nine-play, 63-yard drive that put Barrett in the spotlight as he gained 43 yards on six carries. Sessums called his own number at the goal line and gave the Crusaders a 28-20 lead they never relinquished.

Stars of the game: Brown only had 83 yards and two touchdowns. He scored on a 37-yard end around in the first half and a 32-yard screen pass in the second half. He also had a 21-yard run called back. … Tampa Catholic linebacker Deshard Hughes had a 79-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Stats of the game: Inmon had four catches for 39 yards and a touchdown. He also took the opening kickoff of the second half 90 yards for a touchdown but left the game later in the third quarter with an injury. … Lamar Harden scored a rushing touchdown for Gibbs.
