TAMPA — Wharton played the spoiler for Freedom's homecoming, defeating its neighborhood rival.
The Wildcats were led on offense by senior quarterback Ryan Hatter, who threw for 108 yards and a touchdown and ran for one score. Senior wideout Marvin Murray totaled three catches for 94 yards and two scores plus a 2-point conversion catch.
Once Wharton built its lead the Wildcats leaned on senior running back David Larry, who rushed for 118 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown.
A late interception by Bobby Jackson on a failed fake punt of the Patriots gave the home crowd a little hope with 8:03 left. The Patriots (2-6) scored on the next play to get within 29-14. The onside kick failed and Wharton scored once more for the victory.
