TAMPA — Running back Vernon Hargreaves scored three touchdowns and ran for four two-point conversions, and center Gabe Nold led a dominant offensive line as Wharton clinched its first playoff berth in three years with a 44-21 win over Alonso on Friday.
The teams were playing for the No. 2 spot in Class 8A, District 6 behind Plant. But after Brandon Holloway scored the game's first points on a 56-yard run for Alonso (6-3, 1-2), Wharton (5-4, 2-1) took control with a 28-0 blitz.
"There are no words," Hargreaves said. "I'm just trying to soak it in."
Hargreaves scored on runs of 7 and 11 yards, and a 74-yard pass from Chase Litton (19-for-25, 283 yards, two touchdowns). Wharton held a 435-189 edge in yardage and finished with a 23-6 first-down advantage.
"We were just trying to make a statement anyway we could," Nold said.
