ZEPHYRHILLS — A tale of two halves saw Zephyrhills pull out a 41-14 win against Gulf on Friday night.
Zephyrhills (4-2), which was called for a penalty on its opening kickoff, was flagged 11 times for 80 yards.
Quarterback Jamal Roberts struggled early with four interceptions in the first half. He threw eight passes and completed one before his touchdown pass in the third quarter.
"I put the first half on me," Roberts said. "Quarterback's gotta have a short memory."
Roberts ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the first quarter, but stole the show with three rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown in the second half.
After a slight rain delay before the second half, the Bulldogs erased the first-half mistakes to put the game to rest.
On a broken run by Malik Mutcherson in the third quarter, Roberts found the ball in his hands after Mutcherson had seemingly been tackled in the backfield. Roberts went on to run 25 yards to score.
Malik Mutcherson rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns, and the Bulldogs defense held the Bucs to 122 total yards.
Gulf (1-4) lost 11 yards collectively on the ground, but passed for 133. Chris Klyap was sacked three times, but went 8-for-15 for 82 yards passing.
On a trick play in the fourth quarter, Avery Welch received a pitch, then threw a short pass to Ty'shon Peters, scored his second touchdown.
