ST. PETERSBURG — With 400 totals yards of offense against Seminole's 78, Gibbs solidified its 5A-9 title. But until the fourth quarter, the Gladiators led just 7-0.
"We weren't mentally focused at all," said halfback Mike Kendricks, who finished with 120 yards and a touchdown. "We weren't happy at all (during halftime)."
Gibbs (6-3, 4-0) held a 7-0 halftime lead thanks to a 25-yard run by Emmanuel Stewart in the second quarter. He finished with a game-high 127 yards. The Warhawks (1-9, 0-4) stood their ground in the third but a flea flicker on the last play of the quarter was intercepted by Gibbs safety Gary Simon.
Kendricks scored on a 36-yard sweep two plays into the fourth quarter and then, after stopping the Warhawks on downs, senior quarterback Josh Rembert scampered in from 5 yards out to give the Gladiators a 21-0 lead.
