1. Armwood football

No. 1 in the tampabay.com/hometeam Fab 50. No. 1 in any poll of Tampa Bay football. So, um, yeah, why not No. 1 here after Thursday's triumphant — if not low-scoring and a little ugly — 9-6 victory over Tampa Bay Tech.

2. John Castelamare

Outside of Pasco County you may not have heard of the Wesley Chapel coach, but trust us, he's one of the really, really good guys. We dig that he still wears pants and a tie on the sideline, but even more we dig his team's victory Friday over rival Wiregrass Ranch. Hit harder by transfers than just about anyone, Coach Cas and his boys got a much-needed win.

3. Bob Hudson

Another good guy, the East Lake coach suspended his top running back for a fight in Week 1, even if the FHSAA didn't. Took guts and left his team short-handed against Largo in a big game, but when Jamaal Wilburn returned against Tarpon Springs, he was ready and ran for 127 yards and the clinching touchdown.

4. Jamaal Wilburn

See No. 3.

5. Pinellas Park

Five wins in five seasons. This year, two already. We're not saying the Patriots are ready for the playoffs, but they are showing for a change, they are ready.

6. Pinellas County volleyball

Recruiting allegations are all the rage, with East Lake on the hot seat thanks to accusations from two rivals. It's almost enough to make you forget some the big victories and fine play this season by … by … see what I mean? Hopefully the adults — and judging by comments on the Web site, I may be using the term loosely — can resolve this so the kids can get back to playing.

7. Land O'Consistency

The top football teams on the North Suncoast — Pasco and Nature Coast — lose this week, leaving Land O'Lakes atop the local heap. What's new?

8. Spoto football

Soccer player starting at QB. Winning games with defense. Relies on two-way players. Running the wing-T. Coach (Dale Caparaso) finds redemption. What's not to love about this team?

9. Plant

A miraculous comeback by Tampa Bay Tech planted some doubt. But Thursday's trouncing of Jefferson shows the Panthers are far from done, Phillip Ely or no Phillip Ely.

10. Alton Taylor

The Countryside running back, above right, has scored four touchdowns … three times … this season. Nuff said.
