St. Petersburg — At halftime Friday, St. Petersburg Catholic's 6-2 lead over Middleton resembled a baseball game. But the Tigers broke it open in the third quarter on their way to a 35-14 victory.
After a Barons missed field goal, Earnest Mingo burst up the middle for an 80-yard touchdown. A minute later, Wendell Lewis returned Chris McKay's interception 50 yards for a touchdown. Lewis snared another interception on the Barons' next drive. Five plays later, on fourth and 10 from the SPC 30, he caught a perfectly lofted pass from Willie Clay to make it 22-6.
Lewis' third interception came in the end zone on the Barons' next drive. And the Tigers (5-2, 4-1 2A-5) scored on Vasty Paul's 5-yard run.
Mingo led the Tigers with 139 yards on five carries. Keelan Bryant led the Barons (5-3, 3-2) with 86 yards on 18.
